Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra comes down to shape and cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is the tall successor to the Z Fold 7, with a 200MP triple camera including a 3× telephoto, bigger screens and a 5,000 mAh battery, from US$2,099. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a new shorter, wider model (known before launch as the "Z Fold 8 Wide") with a 4:3 inner screen, no telephoto and a US$1,899 starting price. They share the processor, charging speeds, IP48 rating and software. Both launched on 22 July 2026 and are on sale now.

Up front: we're a foldable case designer, not a phone maker, and we make cases for both models. So here is the buyer's decision, resolved honestly, framed by how you'll use the phone rather than by the spec sheet. For case picks across both phones, see our best Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases guide. Updated 29 September 2026.

Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: which should you buy?

Buy the Z Fold 8 Ultra if you're upgrading from a Z Fold 5, Z Fold 6 or Z Fold 7 and want the flagship experience: the bigger displays, the best cameras with a 3× telephoto, and the traditional taller, narrower Z Fold shape you already know how to hold. Coming from a Z Fold 7, your cases carry over too.

Buy the Z Fold 8 if you've been curious about a foldable but found the traditional Z Fold too tall and narrow in the hand. The shorter, wider body and 4:3 inner screen are a genuine ergonomic change. You'll give up the telephoto camera and the biggest displays, but gain a lighter phone, a better screen shape for reading, and a lower price in the US and UK.

Already on a Z Fold 7? The Ultra is the like-for-like upgrade. Its real gains are 45W charging, a 5,000 mAh battery, a 50MP ultrawide and a brighter panel. If your Z Fold 7 still gets you through the day, holding is reasonable.

The Ultra wins on cameras and screen size. The Z Fold 8 wins on weight, reading-friendly shape and (in the US and UK) price. Chip, charging, brightness, water resistance, storage and software are shared. Read that as: the Ultra is the better all-rounder; the Z Fold 8 is the more interesting design bet. Every figure here comes from our Galaxy Z Fold 8 specs, price & release date guide, and the wide model's full measurements are in Z Fold 8 Wide vs Z Fold 8: dimensions and fit.

Reasons to buy the Z Fold 8 Ultra

The best reasons to buy the Z Fold 8 Ultra in 2026 are its camera, its bigger screens and the fact that it's a like-for-like upgrade from a Z Fold 7. In short:

  • The only telephoto in the pair. A 200MP main camera plus a 10MP 3× telephoto and 50MP ultrawide. The Z Fold 8 has no telephoto at all.
  • Bigger screens. A 6.5-inch cover screen you can use without unfolding, and an 8-inch inner display for video and games.
  • The biggest battery. 5,000 mAh, up 600 mAh on the Z Fold 7, with 45W wired and 20W wireless charging.
  • Your cases carry over. It folds to the same 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm and 215 g as the Z Fold 7, so a well-made Z Fold 7 case should fit.
  • The familiar shape. Narrower (72.8 mm) and thinner (8.9 mm) folded, so it's the easier carry in a narrow jeans pocket.

Who the Ultra suits best

Upgraders from a Z Fold 5, 6 or 7. Same tall shape, same pocket feel. Over the Z Fold 7 you get 45 W wired and 20 W wireless charging (up from 25 W and 15 W), 600 mAh more battery, a 50 MP ultrawide (up from 12 MP) and a 3,000-nit peak panel. Because the folded footprint is identical, your Z Fold 7 cases come with you.

Photography-first buyers. If you shoot portraits or product photography, the Ultra's 200 MP main plus 10 MP 3× telephoto makes it the only choice.

Big-screen media. The Ultra's 8.0-inch inner panel is the larger screen for video and games. (If you mostly read documents, books or comics, the Z Fold 8's 4:3 panel is the better shape.)

Business power users. The bigger 6.5-inch cover screen handles email and messaging without unfolding, and the Ultra takes Z Fold 7-footprint accessories such as our Scribe K1 keyboard case. Our best Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra cases guide covers the rest of the range for this model.

Reasons to buy the Z Fold 8 instead

Editorial hero shot of a shorter wider closed foldable phone silhouette on a cream studio surface with warm amber accent light, representing the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 with its shorter, wider shape.

People who found the Z Fold's cover screen cramped. The Z Fold 8's 5.5-inch cover screen sits on a shorter, wider body, and it opens into a 7.6-inch 4:3 inner panel.

Readers and note-takers. A 4:3 panel is a much better shape for pages, documents and split-screen than a tall 8-inch display.

Value buyers who still want a foldable. It's US$200 less than the Ultra in the US (US$1,899 vs US$2,099) and £200 less in the UK. In euro markets the launch prices were close, and the Ultra actually started slightly lower, at €1,883 against €1,929.

Lighter and shorter. At 201 g it's 14 g lighter than the Ultra, and at 123.9 mm tall folded it fits shorter pockets and small bags. The trade-off: it's wider (81.9 mm vs 72.8 mm) and thicker (9.7 mm vs 8.9 mm), so in a narrow jeans pocket the Ultra is the easier carry.

Which cases fit each model

Z Fold 7 cases fit the Z Fold 8 Ultra; nothing older fits the Z Fold 8.

Model Folded size Older cases that fit FoldifyCase cases sold for it
Z Fold 8 Ultra 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm, 215 g Z Fold 7 cases, thanks to an identical folded footprint and weight. Check the camera cut-out and confirm the listing names the Ultra. Axon M2, Axon M1, Apex M3, Spineguard P1, Sentinel H1, Vanguard H1, Kinetic P1, Envoy C1, Commuter C1, Axis P2 and the Scribe K1 keyboard case. See the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra collection.
Z Fold 8 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm, 201 g None. No Z Fold 7, 6 or 5 case fits. Axon M2, Axon M1, Apex M3, Spineguard P1 and Sentinel H1, each in its own Z Fold 8 mould, plus our lens protector and Ion Glass screen protector. See the Galaxy Z Fold 8 collection.

You can't move a case between the two Z Fold 8 models either. 123.9 × 81.9 mm against 158.4 × 72.8 mm is a completely different shape, and the camera islands and cover screens differ too. Be wary of any listing that claims one case fits "Z Fold 8, 7, 6 and 5"; check which Z Fold 8 it means. For the detail, see Will your case fit the Z Fold 8 Ultra? and Galaxy Z Fold 8 (wide) cases: what fits.

MagSafe-style magnets: they come from the case

Neither model has built-in magnets. Both are Qi2 Ready with 20 W wireless charging, so on either phone the MagSafe-style snap comes from the case. That's what the N52 magnetic rings in our Axon M2, Apex M3, Spineguard P1 and Axon M1 are for. Each is made in separate moulds for the Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra, so MagSafe-compatible chargers, wallets and car mounts snap on to either. More in Does the Z Fold 8 have MagSafe? and Best Z Fold 8 Ultra MagSafe cases.

The S Pen question

Settled: neither the Z Fold 8 nor the Z Fold 8 Ultra supports the S Pen, and the Z Fold 7 didn't either. The S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro only work with the Z Fold 3, 4, 5 and 6, and no case can add S Pen support to a phone without the digitiser. More in our Galaxy Z Fold S Pen guide.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra FAQ

What's the biggest difference between the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra?

Shape. The Ultra keeps the tall, narrow Z Fold body at 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm folded; the Z Fold 8 is shorter and wider at 123.9 × 81.9 × 9.7 mm with a 4:3 inner screen. The Ultra also adds a bigger 6.5-inch cover screen, a 3× telephoto and a 5,000 mAh battery. Chip, charging, IP48 and software are the same.

What are the best reasons to buy the Z Fold 8 Ultra?

Its camera, its screens and its fit with Z Fold 7 accessories. The Ultra is the only Z Fold 8 with a telephoto (10MP 3× alongside a 200MP main), it has a 6.5-inch cover screen and 8-inch inner display, and its 5,000 mAh battery is the larger. It also shares the Z Fold 7's folded size, so Z Fold 7 cases carry over.

Is the Z Fold 8 Ultra worth the extra price?

Yes, if you want the telephoto camera, the bigger cover screen or to keep your Z Fold 7 cases. In the US and UK it costs US$200 or £200 more than the Z Fold 8, and in euro markets it launched slightly cheaper. If you mainly read, browse and message, the Z Fold 8's 4:3 screen and lighter body give you more for less.

How much do the Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra cost?

The Z Fold 8 starts at US$1,899 / £1,699 / €1,929 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra at US$2,099 / £1,899 / €1,883 for 256 GB. That's US$200 and £200 more for the Ultra; in euro markets the Ultra launched slightly cheaper. For Australian and Canadian pricing, check Samsung's local store, as offers change often.

How tall is the Z Fold 8 Ultra?

The Z Fold 8 Ultra is 158.4 mm tall, folded or open. Folded it measures 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm, and unfolded 158.4 × 143.2 × 4.1 mm. That's 34.5 mm taller than the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which stands 123.9 mm tall, and exactly the same height as the Z Fold 7.

Which Z Fold 8 storage option should I buy?

Both models come in 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB, and neither has a memory card slot, so you can't add storage later. 256 GB suits most people who stream and back photos up to the cloud. Step up to 512 GB if you shoot lots of photos and video or keep offline media; 1 TB is for heavy video users.

Which one has the better camera?

The Ultra. Its 200 MP main camera, 10 MP 3× telephoto and 50 MP ultrawide beat the Z Fold 8's dual 50 MP setup, and the Z Fold 8 has no telephoto camera at all. If you zoom in for portraits, events or product shots, the Ultra is the clear choice.

Which one has better battery life?

It's close. The Ultra has the larger cell (5,000 mAh vs 4,800 mAh), but GSMArena measured slightly longer active use on the Z Fold 8: 13:59h against 13:06h. Both charge at 45 W wired and 20 W wireless, so topping up is equally quick on either phone.

Will my Z Fold 7 case fit either model?

It should fit the Z Fold 8 Ultra, which has identical folded dimensions (158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm) and weight (215 g); just check the camera cut-out. It won't fit the Z Fold 8, which is shorter and wider, and no older Z Fold case does. You'll need a case made for that model.

Which one should I buy as a first foldable?

The Z Fold 8. Its shorter, wider shape and 4:3 inner screen are a friendlier introduction to book-style foldables, it's the lighter of the two at 201 g, and it's the cheaper option in the US and UK. Choose the Ultra instead if camera zoom matters to you.

For Canadian buyers

Both models have been on sale in Canada since the 22 July 2026 launch. Local pricing and trade-in offers change often, so check Samsung Canada or your carrier for current figures. We ship to Canada: per our shipping policy, Standard shipping is free and takes 7–10 business days door to door, and Express takes 5–7 business days.

For Australian buyers

Both models are on sale in Australia. Check Samsung Australia or your carrier for current local pricing and bundles. Z Fold 7 owners moving to the Ultra can keep their cases; if you're buying the Z Fold 8, start with our Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases. Delivery times are the same as everywhere we ship (Standard 7–10 business days, Express 5–7) per our shipping policy.

For UK buyers

UK launch pricing is £1,699 for the Z Fold 8 and £1,899 for the Z Fold 8 Ultra (256 GB). Both are on sale now through Samsung UK and major retailers. We ship to the UK with the same Standard (7–10 business days, free) and Express (5–7 business days) options listed in our shipping policy.

Our verdict: which one we'd actually buy

If we were buying a personal Z Fold 8 series phone tomorrow, we'd buy the Ultra. The camera stack alone justifies the US$200 premium, the bigger cover screen is easier to live with, and coming from a Z Fold 7 we'd keep every case we already own.

But if we were recommending a foldable to someone who has been on the fence for two generations, someone who wanted a foldable but found the Z Fold too tall and narrow in the hand, we'd say try the Z Fold 8. Its 4:3 inner screen is the best shape Samsung has shipped for reading and split-screen, and it's lighter and cheaper to get into.
