Does the Z Fold 8 have MagSafe? No. Neither the Galaxy Z Fold 8 nor the Z Fold 8 Ultra has built-in magnets. Both are Qi2 Ready: Z Fold 8 wireless charging runs at up to 20W on either model, and a Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible magnetic case adds the magnets that let MagSafe-style chargers, stands and car mounts snap on (Android Central).
Full disclosure: we design MagSafe-compatible cases for foldables, including the Apex M3, Axon M2 and Spineguard P1 for both Z Fold 8 models, so we have an obvious interest in this answer. That's exactly why we'll be precise. The magnets come from the case, some case designs really do hurt charging, and we'll show you which ones. If you just want the shortlist, start with our best Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases by model or, for the tall model, the best Z Fold 8 Ultra cases. Updated 29 September 2026.
Does the Z Fold 8 have wireless charging?
Yes. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra charge wirelessly at up to 20W, up from 15W on the Z Fold 7, and wired charging jumps to 45W. Any standard Qi or Qi2 pad will charge either phone. What they don't have is magnets, so the bare phone rests on a flat pad the way earlier Galaxy foldables do.
| Z Fold 8 Ultra | Z Fold 8 (wide) | Z Fold 7 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wireless charging | Up to 20W | Up to 20W | Up to 15W |
| Wired charging | 45W | 45W | 25W |
| Built-in magnets (MagSafe-style) | No | No | No |

Samsung quotes 67% in 30 minutes over 45W wired on the Z Fold 8 Ultra, so a cable is still the fastest top-up. Full specs are in our Galaxy Z Fold 8 specs, price & release date guide, and if you're still choosing a model, see Z Fold 8 vs Z Fold 8 Ultra: which to buy.
Does the Z Fold 8 Ultra have MagSafe or magnetic charging?
No. The Z Fold 8 Ultra has no MagSafe and no magnets inside, and the wide Z Fold 8 is the same. MagSafe is Apple's name for its magnet system. The Android equivalent is Qi2 magnetic charging, and Samsung hasn't built Qi2 magnets into any of its phones yet, the Galaxy S26 series included (Android Central).
If you were waiting to see whether Samsung would add MagSafe-style magnets to the Fold 8, it didn't: both models launched on 22 July 2026 without them. So does the Z Fold 8 have MagSafe in any form? Only through the case. A MagSafe charger has nothing to grip on the bare back. Fit a case with a magnet ring and the same charger snaps into place and stays aligned over the coil. On a foldable, the case isn't what threatens MagSafe. It's the only reason MagSafe-style accessories work at all.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Qi2 compatible?
Yes, as a "Qi2 Ready" phone. Both Z Fold 8 models support the Qi2 wireless standard but leave out the magnet ring that full Qi2 phones carry. Samsung expects the magnets to come from a case, the same approach it took with the Galaxy S26 series (SammyGuru). What that means in practice:
- Bare phone: charges on any flat Qi or Qi2 pad at up to 20W, but won't hold on a magnetic stand or puck.
- With a Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible magnetic case: snaps onto Qi2 and MagSafe-style chargers, stands, wallets and car mounts, with the coil held in alignment.
- Speed cap: Z Fold 8 wireless charging tops out at 20W either way. The Qi2 standard allows up to 25W, but the phone sets the limit (Android Central), so a faster Qi2 charger won't charge it any quicker.
How to add MagSafe to a Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra
Fit a case with a MagSafe-compatible magnet ring. That's the whole fix: the ring in the case back lines the phone's charging coil up with a MagSafe or Qi2 charger and holds magnetic wallets, stands and car mounts. There's nothing to switch on in the phone.
Our magnetic options for both the Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra all use N52-grade magnet rings and charge through the case:
- Apex M3: a slim two-piece liquid-silicone shell that leaves the hinge free.
- Spineguard P1: a spring-loaded hinge cover, a rotating ring kickstand and a built-in 9H cover-screen protector.
- Axon M2: a wrap-around hinge cover, an alloy frame and a rotating metal ring stand.
- Axon M1: a clear polycarbonate shell with a rotating ring stand.
When comparing any magnetic case, check three things: magnet grade (a weak ring lets a heavy foldable slide), where the ring sits over the coil, and how thick the back is. Our ranked picks are in the Z Fold 8 Ultra MagSafe case guide. A Z Fold 7 magnetic case will usually fit the Ultra because the folded size is identical (check the camera cut-out first), but nothing made for the Z Fold 7 fits the wide Z Fold 8. Browse every option in the Z Fold 8 Ultra cases and Galaxy Z Fold 8 cases collections.
Does a case block Z Fold 8 wireless charging?
No, a properly designed foldable case does not block wireless charging. Qi wireless power passes through a few millimetres of plastic, TPU, silicone or leather without trouble. The failures are specific: metal sitting directly over the charging coil, a very thick back in the coil zone, or a magnet ring that pulls the phone off-centre on the pad. A slim magnetic case like the Apex M3 slim MagSafe case adds almost nothing to the folded profile, and its N52 magnet ring self-centres the phone on the charging coil. The problem was never "cases". It's a handful of design decisions, covered below.
The question is harder on a Z Fold than on a normal phone. A slab phone has one flat back with the coil dead-centre. A Galaxy Z Fold puts its coil on one half of a folding chassis, beside a hinge that gets opened and closed thousands of times (Samsung rates the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8's hinge to 500,000 folds), and it relies on the case for magnetic alignment.
Does a metal case stop wireless charging?
Not if the metal is kept off the charging coil. Solid metal over a Qi coil acts like a shield and kills the transfer. That's real physics, and it's why cheap "metal-look" cases sometimes cripple charging. On the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, our metal-framed option is the Axon M2 hinge cover case with rotating metal ring: an aerospace-grade alloy frame around a polycarbonate back, an N52 magnet ring, and wireless charging through the case with the ring folded flat. (On a Z Fold 7, 6 or 5, the aluminium Halo M1 MagSafe case is our metal option, and it also supports wireless charging through the case.) Aluminium conducts heat far better than plastic, so metal in the right place doesn't trap warmth the way a thick, sealed plastic shell can. The difference is entirely in where the metal sits.
How thick can a case be before wireless charging drops out?
Roughly 3mm over the coil is a sensible practical ceiling. Beyond that the Qi field weakens, charging slows, and the pad works harder, which means more heat. This is the one place a heavy-duty case can cost you. A rugged, multi-layer case like the Vanguard H1 heavy-duty case (sold for the Z Fold 8 Ultra, 7, 6 and 5) is built for drop protection first, with reinforced corners, raised edges, 360-degree hinge coverage and a built-in kickstand. It doesn't have a magnet ring, and its listing doesn't claim wireless charging through the case. If you live on a charging pad, choose one of the slim magnetic cases instead. Tougher protection can be the right trade; just make it knowingly rather than discover it at 6am on a flat battery.
Will MagSafe alignment be off if the case magnets are weak?
Yes. Weak or misplaced magnets are the real cause of "my wireless charging keeps stopping overnight". A magnet array that's too weak lets the phone creep off-centre, the coil drifts out of alignment, charging stutters, and the phone heats up as it hunts for the field. A folded Z Fold is more top-heavy than a slab phone, so our magnetic Z Fold 8 cases (the Apex M3, Axon M2, Axon M1 and Spineguard P1) all use N52-grade magnets. If a "MagSafe" case has dropped charge on your nightstand, it wasn't MagSafe failing. It was an underspecced magnet.
Does charging through a case make the Z Fold 8 run hot?
It can. Heat is the real risk with foldable charging, more than speed ever is. Wireless charging is less efficient than wired, so it sheds more heat, and a sealed, poorly ventilated case traps it against a battery that already sits behind two displays and a hinge. Heat is what degrades a lithium battery over years. The fix is design, not going caseless: keep the charging zone thin, avoid airtight shells, and don't fast-charge while gaming. The Spineguard P1, for example, has an internal honeycomb pattern designed to help dissipate heat.
Wired, reverse and overnight charging with a case on
Does a case slow down 45W wired charging?
No. A case has essentially no effect on wired charging, provided the USB-C cut-out is cut properly. Both Z Fold 8 models support 45W wired charging (the Z Fold 7 topped out at 25W), and wired power bypasses everything a case touches. The only real-world failure is a port opening too tight for a chunky braided cable plug, so check the cut-out if you use one. You need a charger rated for 45W to get full speed: our 45W Super Fast USB-C wall charger delivers up to 45W over USB-C Power Delivery (PD and QC 3.0) and is made for the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series.
Can I use reverse wireless charging with a case on?
Yes, and a slim case usually doesn't get in the way. Samsung's Wireless PowerShare lets you top up a watch or earbuds off the back of a Galaxy phone. The power involved is low and the accessory is small, so a slim case back doesn't interfere. A magnet ring can even help by holding a magnetic accessory centred instead of letting it slide off. Just don't try it through a thick metal panel: the same coil-shielding rule applies.
Should I take the case off to charge overnight?
No. With a well-designed case there's no benefit, and taking a foldable in and out of a case every night is how hinges and back panels get stressed. The overnight concern is heat and sitting at 100% for hours, and you solve both with software (Samsung's Protect Battery and adaptive charging settings, which cap or pace the charge), not by stripping the case. If your current case runs hot on the pad overnight, that's a verdict on the case, not on charging with a case.
Do screen protectors or lens guards affect charging?
No. Screen protectors and lens guards sit nowhere near the charging coil, so they have no effect on wireless or wired charging. The only accessory that touches charging is the case back and its magnets. Our Ion Glass tempered screen protector and tempered camera lens protector both come in Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra versions, and neither will cost you a watt.
Which wireless charger works with the Z Fold 8?
Any Qi or Qi2 wireless charger will charge a Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra lying flat on it. Magnetic MagSafe or Qi2 stands, pucks and car mounts need a magnetic case, because the grip comes from the case's magnet ring. For the fastest top-up, choose a Z Fold 8 wireless charger rated for 20W or more; a faster one won't push the phone past its 20W limit.
Alignment matters more on a foldable than on a slab phone. A folded Fold is thicker and more top-heavy, so the ring is doing more work. If you're buying a magnetic mount, check it's made to hold a folded foldable, not just a light slab phone.
A note on our own charging accessories, because we'd rather you buy the right thing: the Foldable 3-in-1 Wireless Dock (phone, smartwatch and earbuds, with a triple-coil pad that charges in portrait, landscape or flex mode) and the Orbit dual-coil wireless car mount (a mechanical clamp rather than magnets) are listed for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, 6 and 5 and Z Flip 7, 6 and 5. We don't list either for the Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra, so on a Z Fold 8, pair a magnetic case with a MagSafe-style mount instead. If you're still on a Z Fold 7, both are built for your phone.
The ideal charging setup for a cased Z Fold 8
45W wired for speed, magnetic wireless (up to 20W on both Z Fold 8 models) for convenience, and a case that doesn't trap heat. Our recommendation: keep a slim Apex M3 or a hinge-protecting Spineguard P1 on the phone full-time (both have N52 magnet rings and come in Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra versions), top up wired with a 45W charger when you need speed, and use a magnetic stand for hands-free desk charging. Turn on Protect Battery to cap the charge below 100% on long overnight charges.
The short version: the Z Fold 8 doesn't have MagSafe, and a case doesn't wreck its wireless charging. Bad case design does. Keep metal off the coil, stay under about 3mm over the charging zone, use a strong magnet ring, and avoid shells that seal heat in. Do that and a cased Z Fold 8 or Z Fold 8 Ultra charges at its full 45W wired and 20W wireless, and gains the MagSafe-style accessory ecosystem the phone doesn't offer on its own.
Z Fold 8 MagSafe and wireless charging FAQ
Does the Z Fold 8 have MagSafe?
No. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has no MagSafe and no built-in magnets. It is Qi2 Ready, which means it follows the Qi2 charging standard but needs a magnetic case to snap onto MagSafe-style or Qi2 chargers, wallets and mounts. With that case on, it charges wirelessly at up to 20W.
Does the Z Fold 8 Ultra have MagSafe?
No. The Z Fold 8 Ultra matches the standard Z Fold 8 here: no built-in magnets, Qi2 Ready and up to 20W wireless charging. Add a MagSafe-compatible magnetic case and it works with magnetic chargers, stands and car mounts. It shares the Z Fold 7's folded size, so Z Fold 7 magnetic cases generally fit; check the camera cut-out.
Does the Z Fold 8 have wireless charging?
Yes. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Z Fold 8 Ultra charge wirelessly at up to 20W, up from 15W on the Z Fold 7, and support 45W wired charging. Any Qi or Qi2 pad will charge them. Magnetic chargers need a magnetic case, because neither phone has magnets built in.
Is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Qi2 compatible?
Yes, as a Qi2 Ready phone. Both Z Fold 8 models support Qi2 charging but leave out the built-in magnet ring, so you need a Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible magnetic case for the phone to align and hold on a Qi2 charger. Charging tops out at 20W, below the 25W the Qi2 standard allows.
Does the Z Fold 8 have magnetic charging?
Not on its own. The Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra have no magnets inside, so a magnetic charger will not stick to the bare phone. Magnetic charging works once you fit a case with a MagSafe-compatible magnet ring, which lines the phone's coil up with the charger and holds it in place.
What wireless charger works with the Z Fold 8?
Any Qi or Qi2 wireless charger works, and a flat pad needs no case. For a magnetic stand, puck or car mount, fit a magnetic case first. Use a charger rated for 20W or more for the fastest top-up, and choose a mount built to hold a folded foldable, which is thicker and more top-heavy than a slab phone.
Do cases reduce wireless charging speed on the Z Fold 8?
No, a slim case shouldn't noticeably slow it. Both Z Fold 8 models charge wirelessly at up to 20W. Charging only drops when metal covers the coil, the case is very thick over the coil, or weak magnets let the phone drift off-centre on the pad.
Is it bad to charge a foldable with the case on?
No, with a well-ventilated case. Repeatedly removing the case to charge stresses the hinge and back panel. Leave a properly designed case on and manage heat with Samsung's Protect Battery and adaptive charging settings instead. If a case runs noticeably hot on the pad, that points to the case design, not to charging with a case.
Can you use a MagSafe car mount with a Z Fold 8 case?
Yes, if the case has a strong magnet ring. The bare phone has no magnets, so the mount grips the case, not the phone. A folded Z Fold is thicker and more top-heavy than a slab phone, so a weak ring will droop or drop. Choose a case with an N52 magnet ring for car mounts and vertical stands.
