iPhone Duo Hinge Durability: The Number Apple Didn't Publish

We design hinge covers for a living. So we read the durability section first, and then we read it again looking for what was not in it.

What Apple did publish

This is a genuinely strong durability disclosure. It is more detail than Apple normally gives about a mechanism, and more than most foldable makers give about anything.

The detail we find most revealing is custom adhesives for flex relief. Flex relief means the design assumes the display stack will move as it folds, and the bonding is tuned to let it move rather than hold it rigid. That is the correct way to build a folding panel. It is also an admission that the stack is not a solid sheet, which is exactly why fold count matters.

The number that is not there

Every foldable buyer asks the same question before any other: how many times can I fold it?

Samsung answers it. Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge at 500,000 folds. Whether that figure survives contact with real pockets is a separate argument — but the number exists, it is on the record, and you can hold Samsung to it.

Apple has published no equivalent. Not a fold count, not a drop-test result, not a crease depth, and no statement about whether the IP68 rating was measured with the phone open, closed, or both — or how it behaves after a year of folding.

The part almost everyone is getting wrong about IP68

The Duo's IP68 rating is the genuine engineering surprise of this launch. Every Samsung book-style foldable to date, the Z Fold 8 included, is rated IP48 — the 4 means it resists solid objects larger than 1 mm and does not keep out fine dust. Apple matched its slab-phone rating on a device with a moving seam. That is hard.

But here is the distinction that matters, and it is being flattened in most of the coverage: an ingress rating describes what reaches the electronics, not what collects in the mechanism.

iFixit has been tearing down foldables for seven years, and runs a memorable test: pour fluorescent powder over a hinge, then open it up. On Samsung's clamshell, despite protective tape and purpose-built brushes along the hinge, they found the mechanism caked with the stuff. Their Galaxy Z Fold 8 teardown reached the same conclusion — hinges remain the weak point. Their summary of where foldables stand is blunt: they would recommend one only to someone with, in their words, "very clean pockets."

So the honest reading of IP68 on the Duo is: grit is far less likely to reach anything electrical, and Apple deserves real credit for that. It does not mean the hinge channel stays clean. Until somebody does the powder test on a retail Duo, nobody knows which of those two things Apple actually solved.

The soft surface is on the inside

Read the materials list again and notice the asymmetry. The outer front is Ceramic Shield 2. The back is Ceramic Shield. The inner display — the expensive one, the one that defines the product — is a custom polymer over high-strength glass.

Apple says that polymer is 40% stiffer than the industry standard, and that is a meaningful improvement. It is still a polymer, and a polymer is softer than ceramic-reinforced glass. On every foldable ever made, the inner panel is the surface that marks first.

Two things sharpen that. The Duo's inner display carries a Nano Texture finish, which is a coating, and coatings scuff. And Apple Pencil support is coming to both displays later in 2026 — a hard tip, repeatedly, on the softest surface on the device.

Apple's own accessory line-up quietly acknowledges this. The iPhone Duo Case is US$79 and leaves the inner display exposed when the phone is shut. The iPhone Duo Folio is US$129 and covers it. That price gap is the cost of protecting the panel Apple did not armour.

What happens when it does break

This is the part with the least published information and the worst track record.

iFixit's repairability scores across the category: the original Galaxy Fold 2 out of 10. The 2020 Motorola Razr 1 out of 10, with a battery glued to the folding screen. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold — the best-supported foldable for repair, with official parts and guides — still only 4 out of 10, and its inner screen replacement guide runs past 200 steps and an estimated 3 to 5 hours for an experienced technician.

Apple has published no repair pricing for the Duo's folding display, and has not said whether the inner display can be replaced independently of the hinge. iFixit's verdict on the Duo before anyone has opened one: they are not optimistic.

The practical consequence is that on this device, prevention is worth more than it is on a slab phone, because the repair path is unknown and the category's history is bad.

What we would actually design against

Reading all of the above as a brief rather than as news, four things follow.

1. Cover the hinge channel, and be honest about why. A case cannot seal a hinge — nothing bolted to the outside can. What a hinge cover does is reduce how much pocket grit reaches the opening in the first place. That is a real benefit and a modest one, and anyone selling it as dust-proofing is overclaiming.
2. Keep everything off the inner panel. Raised bezels, zero contact when shut. On a coated polymer surface that a stylus is about to start touching, this is the single most valuable thing a case does.
3. Thin walls, loaded corners. At 11.3 mm closed and 254 g, the Duo is already the heaviest and thickest foldable in its class. Material belongs where drops land and nowhere else.
4. Leave the side button completely open. Touch ID is capacitive and needs bare skin. A covered power button breaks the unlock — no exceptions.

What would actually settle this

Three things, none of which exist yet:

• A published fold-cycle rating from Apple, or a credible third-party cycle test.
• A powder-ingress teardown on a retail unit — the test that separates "electronics protected" from "mechanism stays clean".
• Apple repair pricing for the inner display and the hinge, and confirmation of whether they can be replaced separately.

The Duo ships 23 October. We are buying one, measuring it, and publishing what we find — including the parts that are inconvenient for a company that sells cases.
